MRS. PEARL POWELL SMITH
We, the Senior and Junior Classes of 1958, dedi¬
cate the XXI Volume of "THE ARROW" to you, Mrs.
Smith, for your interest, willing guidance, and un¬
tiring efforts throughout our school years.
Believe That You Can
Believe that you can and you will not fail.
Though mighty the task begun!
Believe that you can though hard the trail,
And rugged the road you run!
Have faith in yourself! lust know you can
And you're simply bound to do;
And never a barrier, bar, or ban- - -
Can keep you from carrying through!
Believe that you can and then go in
And do with your heart and your soul!
Believe that you can and youTl surely win;
No matter how far the goall
There's a marvelous force in the faith that springs
From this great and noble thought!
By the magic spell of the strength it brings- - -
The mightiest deeds are wrought!
Believe that you can and you will succeed!
For as sure as you hold this thought,
You will back your faith with the power of deed;
Till the last hard fight is fought!
Aye, hold to the thought and you'll do your part
In the way that it should be done!
Just start with a winner's face and heart
And your battle is really won!
- - Author Unknown
Our School
We leave you. School, with mixed emotions.
Some of us go, never to returns
Many will be back for other years.
Some look forward to their proud day of departure;
Others look back on happy memories sprinkled with the salt of experience.
As all our problems pass by us, as soldiers in review,
We see how small they were in camparison to the battle of life that grows so close.
But always we shall remember you, be thankful to you, love you
And carry you ever with us in our hearts.
We bid you farewell.

Dear Student Body:
I am glad to have the opportunity of addressing a message to you at the end
of our school year.
First* I would say a word of congratulations to the annual staff and Mrs. Ames
for capturing for us this book of memories. We all know what a mammoth un¬
dertaking it is* added to the regular routine of a school day. Then I would say
a word to the Seniors:
Would you recall the words I asked you to write at the top of your clean
slates one hot day last September, They went like this:
"It is better to know where you are going than to get there fast, "
Those words are worth remembering each time one starts a clean slate, I will
have a chance to look with pride at your now new and shining ones. It is with
pleasure that I extend sincere congratulations to each of you, 1 hope that your
chosen careers will hold satisfaction and fulfillment.
To the rest of the student body let me say that I have enjoyed working with
you, and I hope you have a happy vacation time- May you return in the fall
with renewed determination to raise your school and yourselves to higher stand¬
ards of ethic* scholarship and citizenship.
My best wishes*

Our Teachers
By R* B* MacDonald
Each teacher has the honor*
On a crisp September day
To open wide the portals
On a new fall school array*
To turn the light of learning
In such a friendly way
That every child reflects it
In their work or in their play.
Youth climbs the hill of knowledge
With a purpose every step
And it is a teacher's duty
To see they don't regret*
To keep Old Glory flying
With honor in the sky
Each teacher imparts knowledge
To every girl and boy.
Teaching is an honor
For it could well be said
They mould our nation's future
Putting knowledge in youth’s head.
So we say to teachers
Wherever they may be
Knowledge is our Master
And our future up to thee.

Junior Class Prophecy
Every year hundreds of historical events are added to our history books. Washington,
Franklin, and Lincoln are all well-known figures of American history as every student
well knows. But have you ever thought what figures of history your ancestors a hundred
years from now will be studying in their history courses? We of the junior class have our
own ideas about these characters* The following is our version of America’s future
history makers:
We visualize Norma Spencer as the first feminine Coast Guard Commander in charge
of recruiting. It is assumed that all recruits with the name, Stanley, will have an easy
time of it.
We predict that Carolyn Crank will become the first woman horse racer to win the
Kentucky Derby. It is speculated that her horse will be named "Jack. "
Timmy Pruitt will become the highest paid baseball player when he receives a cool
million to sign up for the St* Louis Cardinals*
Preston Bell will become the world's most noted explorer when he canoes to the head
of the Amazon River following the migratory habits of the wild South American Dodo
Bird*
Billy McAllen will follow Preston up the Amazon on foot and become a world hero
when he saves Preston from a tribe of head hunters,
Bonnie Colona will become the first woman president. This will cause the ultimate
downfall of the United States.
Harry Hart promises faithfully he will do something spectacular.
Norman Shrieves will revolutionize the automotive industry by inventing a nuclear
car which can out race, out fly, or out swim any previous car, plane, or boat,
Betty Rose Ewell will follow in Schubert’s footsteps by finishing his "Unfinished Sym-
phony*"
Jimmy Rayne will introduce a new style to replace Rock and Roll by making Hi-Fi
recordings of audience reactions to Elvis Presley.
Rodney Shrives will crash into New York society circles by marrying Marilyn Rocke¬
feller arid by some shrewd dealing will wind up with the whole Rockefeller estate*
Bobby Lambertson, while experimenting with atomic energy in his laboratory, will
blow himself to the moon and become the first man to have done so,
Emma Jean Corbin will become a famous writer by composing her life story in poetry
form, "L "
Reggie Dye km an says he will invent a new element and name it femailillium in honor
of his favorite pastime, courting pretty girls,
Billy Ryan will make his fame by jumping off the flag pole on the Empire State
Building and although he may not live to tell about it, he will become the first to have
tried it,
Billy Vick will establish the first permanent American Colony on the moon and also
will found the first outer space college for space cadets.
The foregoing remarks were written by Chief Rock & Roll so that you have ample
warning to prepare for America’s fate.

We Grow
The philosophy of the faculty of Cape Charles High School is based
upon the idea that the teacher will help the pupil to discover and de¬
velop his interests, attitudes, and abilities ( mental, social, physical,
and spiritual). After the student discovers his interests and abilities,
he is encouraged to set his own goals. From this encouragement he will
develop self-discipline and will be able to take his place in school
and in a democratic society.
In this age of Sputniks, jet propulsion, and hydrogen bombs, young
people realize the importance of a good education. Without it, one
is lost. Since C, C, H, 3, is a small school, the students have the ad¬
vantage of being able to work closely with the faculty and get more
individual instruction. The majority are interested in gaining all of
the knowledge within their abilities, and they strive to do their best.
There is much truth in the old adage, “'All work and no play makes
Jack a dull boy. " Included in the curriculum of the school are activ¬
ities to promote social growth through supervised recreation. The fine
dances held in the gym, and the activities of the worthwhile clubs are
examples. These aid in making the student a well-rounded individual.
Physical development is another important aspect in the life of the
student. The athletic teams and physical education classes help the
boy and girl to understand the value of working as a team, and have
consideration for the “other fellow" while they are growing more alert
physically.
Growing spiritually is important to every person. This is not for¬
gotten at C. C. H. S, The main objective of the Tri-Hi-Y and the Hi-
Y is to make better Christians of the students. The scripture reading
and prayer in the morning starts the day off right for everyone.
With a program devoted to the total needs of the students of C, C, H, S, ,
it is no wonder that the graduates of each year turn out to be the worth¬
while citizens of tomorrow.

SMOKE SIGNALS
from the
Down With Exams!
As the last deadline of the ARROW is frantically trying to be met, the staff mem¬
bers are just recuperating from the mid-term exams; so, fellow students, if this annual
has any defects, do please try to understand. Such exams would wear down the best.
For instance, questions such as:
ENGLISH
1. Did you enjoy "Macbeth?" If not, to what defect in your character do you attrib¬
ute this poor taste?
2. William Shakespeare was bom in April, 1564, and died in April, 1616. Name the
pall bearers at his funeral and give the name of the casket manufacturer of his
casket.
HISTORY
1. List the effects of the discovery of America on the citizens of lower Sloblovia.
2. The United States has had 33 presidents, George Washington was the first, and
Dwight Eisenhower is the present one. Based on this, how many corners are there in
the White House?
MATH
1. Mary is 24 years old. Mary is twice as old as Ann was when Mary was as old as
Ann is now. When is her birthday?
2, If a rabbit eat s four heads of lettuce in three days, and his wife eats three carrots
in two days, what was the price of rabbit stew when Charles I was beheaded?
CHEMISTRY
1. Raise one ounce of nitroglycerine to 600°. Observe through microscope any chem¬
ical changes or reactions.
The only bad part about exams is the fact that we have them. So, our conclusion
is:
woieRV U

RC makes you feel like NEW!
There’s a mighty important reason why so many
folks go for Royal Crown Cola: They’ve tried and
compared Royal Crown Cola with other leading colas
—and by comparison they’ve found that RC suits
their taste best. Yes t RC is best by taste-test—and
you get 2 full glasses in the king-size bottle. So,
enjoy an RC . . . feel like new. Remember: RC is low
in calories!
**\ found some items that were deductible that
I had completely forgotten about. Cancelled
checks are good evidence, too, and I know
Uncle Sam is kind of particular about that."
